|On 25th of July 2017 big companies banded together and announced that you no longer wanted flash in your browser.|
It was easier to abandon the format rather than fixing it so they decided that starting 2021 every webmaster in the world would be forced to give up on using flash.
Naturally that's not an option for a flash archive so here is how you can keep enjoying content on swfchan.
Here's the discussion thread for this message box. Go tell me to update swfchan's version of Ruffle if I have been slacking!
|[EASY]||Ruffle (low functionality)|
Despite the limited support of features the Ruffle project might be the best chance we have to preserve the amazing swf format online. It is open-source but its lead developer is actually sponsored, which gives Ruffle a fighting chance to become feature-complete. If you can contribute to Ruffle with code or donations please do so (the lead dev is sponsored but the project itself has few donors).
- You don't need to do anything except having a ticked checkbox above before pressing GET FILE.
- The drawback is that Ruffle is very much a work in progress and is far from halfway done.
- When using Ruffle, expect many flashes to not work at all and expect those that do work to not work correctly.
- The older the swf the higher the chance it will display as it should.
|[MEDIUM]||Adobe's offline Flash Player (the projector exe)|
Note: I plan to re-write this text late into 2021 so that it looks better...
The basic idea is to not view the flashes in your browser.
^-- This is the preferred reliable way to play flash now.
'Open' any swf file in Adobe's projector directly from your browser.
As you can see the download is from Adobe's site, which is trustworthy.
Grab "flashplayer_32_sa.exe". Open swf files with it, no installation necessary.
|[HARD]||Adobe's Flash Plugin (and a browser that supports it)|
Note: I plan to write this text late into 2021 so that I don't post too many assumptions that turns out to be false.
The basic idea is to use a browser still supporting NPAPI and edit "C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash\mms.cfg".
Or, if you prefer to not need to edit mms.cfg, there are fixed/unbricked versions of the flash plugin available here.
